KAREL STEYLAERTS

Karel Steylaerts studied cello in Brussels and then in Cologne with Maria Kliegel.

A member of the European Youth Orchestra under conductors such as Bernstein and Abbado, he went on to win the Tenuto Competition.

 

He founded the Tröndlin Pianoforte Trio, which specialises in repertoire on period instruments, and has made numerous recordings. Since 2008, he has been principal cellist with the Brussels Philharmonic, while continuing an active chamber music career with TrioFenix.

He teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels and has been accompanying the Queen Elisabeth Competition since 2017. His recording of Bach’s six suites for solo cello (Etcetera, 2022) has been highly acclaimed by critics.
